Him, the man, whom I had always seen wearing a simple wax costume in Benin. He explained that it was the only way to be treated with consideration as a black man in Europe. I suddenly asked myself: is one black first and a man after? The \u20188 Mile Wall\u2019 was built in 1940 in Detroit as a racial separation between white and black houses from a similar social background. Though the 1.80m high 800m long wall was not a real physical boundary, it tells about the psychological barriers, which were built, since slavery, to differentiate people according to their skin color. 19th century so-called scientific studies, proving the inferiority of black men and women, or the famous Parisian human zoos, in which Europeans \u2018met\u2019 black men behind bars, while picnicking at the Acclimatation Gardens, strikingly illustrate that fact. The exotic imagery of the first African postcards, the media, the movies or publicity itself, all contributed to a specific perception of the black men, and continue to broadcast the same image, from one continent to the next. The noble savage, Uncle Tom, Aunt Jemima\u2026 How to get rid, in the 21st century, of the ever-smiling Mr. Banania? This ethnocentric perception, fed by prejudice and biased perceptions or depictions of black people, is turned into a reality in my series and insidiously supports a certain perception, which is not without consequences, when we consider how identities are built. In this series, the \u2018blackface\u2019 is not a farcical pantomime anymore.
